City of Ottawa Corkery Community Centre
The Corkery Community Centre project included a significant expansion to a small existing community building situated in the Carrol Homestead Community Park. The original structure functioned primarily as a skate change area for the outdoor ice rink, featuring rubber flooring, benches, and basic washrooms. The primary objective of the new expansion was to provide recreational programming space for social gatherings, group fitness classes, and summer camps, all while maintaining the function of the community ice rink. Accessibility was addressed with the renovation to ensure universal access to all spaces.
The design philosophy focused on seamlessly connecting the new structure to the existing building while improving accessibility. The new 4,145-square-foot, one-story addition introduces several key amenities, including two multi-purpose rooms, a full-size kitchen, an office, children’s cubbies, and a welcoming, bright lobby. A key feature is the large covered porch, which provides a shaded gathering space overlooking the children’s playground, allowing for active supervision.
