This facility for 66 children, ages 2 to 12 was an addition to Rockcliffe Park Public School. The design of the addition responds to the style of the existing school as well as the domestic nature of the surrounding community. An enclosed link was built to connect the two buildings. Children progress through the age appropriate programs and then on to school in the main building, often returning to the child care centre for after school care.
The three main play-activity rooms open onto the playground, which is located in the shade of several mature trees. The footprint of the childcare centre was arranged to avoid the loss of any of these important shade trees. Access to daylight and views in each of the play-activity rooms is provided by large windows with low sills. Deep eaves over the windows prevent solar heat gain in the summer when the sun is at its highest while allowing passive heating in the winter when the sun is low in the sky.
